When are tax bills for motor vehicles due?
Motor vehicle taxes are collected in July and January and are due in one installment.
Why do you not take checks for motor vehicle taxes that are late?
According to city ordinances, we are not allowed to accept personal or business checks for late motor vehicle taxes. We can accept payment in cash, money order, or certified bank check.
How come I’ve gotten a bill on a car I already sold?
If you have disposed of a vehicle prior to the end of the assessment period and not transferred license plates to another vehicle, you will need to provide proof of this to the Tax Assessor for a possible proration of this bill.
I have moved out of Danbury, but I am still living in Connecticut, why is Danbury sending me a Motor Vehicle tax bill?
Taxes are assessed on October 1st, if your vehicle was still in Danbury at that time you will get a bill from Danbury and you will not get one from the town where you currently live until the following year.

If you vehicle was still registered in Connecticut on October 1st and you have since reregistered in another state you will need to provide information to the Tax Assessor’s Office to have the bill prorated for the time that you were in Connecticut.
