Environmental / Food Protection / Housing Compliance Services
The Environmental Health Program provides thousands of inspections for land use and permitting of on-site septic systems, well water supplies, public swimming pools, recreational / beach sampling & inspection, inspection of hazardous material storage in manufacturing facilities and provided staffing for the Environmental Impact Commission and review of hundreds of properties each year for wetlands and development potential. Our staff also serves as subject experts to the Police and Fire Departments in response to biological and hazardous material releases. The program also participates and conducts emergency preparedness exercises. This year we participated with the State of Connecticut in preparing for and receiving Medical Supplies at our “Point of Distribution” / POD site to ensure that all emergency responders can perform their duties. The purpose of the exercise was to test the city’s ability to respond to emergencies and/or vaccinate the population in the event of a pandemic.  The Land Use projects include the expansion and completion of the Ives Trail; the maintenance of the Lake Kenosia Garden Buffer; The maintenance of the Still River Trail and improvements through the DEEP Grant Process and the improvements of all City parks and Greenways through cooperative efforts within the City and with Community Partners.

The Food Protection & Housing Inspection program provides Thousands of inspections for compliance and educates towards having improved food safety techniques, rental housing, responds to complaints, provides licenses to hotels and rooming houses and enforces the State Lead Poisoning Prevention Regulations. Food inspectors also conduct plan reviews of all new or remodeled food services.  This unit monitors and investigates reports food borne illness and also assists with a variety of other public health functions and communicable disease outbreak investigation.
